SANDING DISCS - ABRASIVES.
WHAT IS A SANDING DISC?
Sanding discs form part of a power tool called a sander. There are many different sanding discs available, all for use in different jobs. There are also a wide variety of abrasive materials that may be chosen. Abrasive materials are the grains that are embedded in the sanding disc that does the actual grinding. Ceramic, Silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, zirconia alumina and diamond are some of the most common abrasive materials that are used.
- Ceramic used in abrasive material is specially designed to handle rough sanding applications. This abrasive application is mainly used for grinding carbon steel, titanium as well as ferrous metals. It is resistant to heat and is a popular choice for high-speed grinding. It is very durable as well as friable; meaning it is self-sharpening.
- Silicone Carbide is an abrasive material that is extremely sharp. It is also friable, making sure it has the ability to have very fast removal rates. This abrasive material is best used for sanding metals such as titanium, copper and brass. It can also be used for grinding plastics, hardwood floors and glass. This material may wear out quicker than other abrasive materials though.
- The most common abrasive material used for sanding discs is Aluminum oxide. It can be used on many materials such as plastics, most metals as well as wood. It is versatile and affordable, however, it is not strong enough to be used on hard materials such as stainless steel.
- Titanium, Stainless steel and cast iron can be sand down by using an abrasive material called Zirconia alumina; also known as "Zirc". This abrasive material has a long lifespan and is extremely heat-resistant.
- The longest lasting and most durable abrasive material is diamond. This material is able to grind glass, stone and concrete. They are, however, extremely expensive.
TIPS FOR USING SANDING DISCS.
- Always make sure that your sanding discs are properly cleaned after every use. It can easily be done with a sanding disc cleaning stick.
- Do not apply too much pressure while grinding as the disc is capable of doing all the work.
- Be sure to wear a mask while grinding, as tiny, dangerous particles will be released from the disc.
- A grinder will also come with a guard, make sure that the guard is always in place while grinding.
- Backing pads are always required when grinding, different discs will use different backing pads. Make sure that you always have the correct one.
