Electrical accessories and their uses: “Elements used in household and industrial electrical wiring are called electrical accessories, e.g. A socket is used with a chandelier, a ceiling rose is used with a ceiling fan, light guide or pendant light.
An electrical outlet is used to power a portable device such as a table fan, table lamp, electric iron, radio, television, etc. A fuse is used to stop excessive current flow in a circuit. Traditional electrical accessories are made of Bakelite, which is a good insulator and is less affected by moisture, oil, etc.
A) Switches and their typesA switch is used to open or close the circuit. It needs to work in a way that makes the circuit solid. When breaking the switch, the current must be interrupted to prevent arcing between the switch blades and the contact terminals. Arcs burn or damage the switch contacts. Such arcing is usually prevented by springing the moving blade for quick action.
There are four types of switches: 1. cup switch 2. discharge switch 3. knife change4.
IC main switch 1. Glass switch: This is a 5A current switch used in household electrical wiring. Also known as a surface switch.
Can be mounted on a wooden board. Or on a round block. It is made of bakelite in various shapes and designs. When choosing a switch, consider the time it takes to make or break a circuit, the location of the terminals, the size of the terminals and the space to connect the wires, the insulation and the function of the contact points.
2. Flush Mount Switches: These switches mount flush to the wall and do not protrude. These grades are used when high quality performance and appearance are desired. These types of switches are used in all newly built homes today. These switches are sometimes called piano switches.
All the above switches are rated for 5A 250V and 15A 250V.3.
3. Knife SwitchThe knife switch consists of knives that are hinged at one end and arranged to go into fork clamps or jaws at the other end. These are available as one-way switches or two-way switches. They are used for electroplating work.
It can be a single shot or a double shot type. A single-throw switch can "switch on and off" a single line, while a two-throw switch can close a line in one direction while simultaneously opening the first line and closing the second line in the other direction. Knife switches for a single-phase line and for a three-phase line are built separately. These switches can control a circuit from 30 to 1000 amps of current
4. IC Main Switch An IC main switch has a cast-iron housing and is therefore referred to as an iron main switch. Porcelain fuse cutouts are installed inside the switch and a handle is installed outside the switch.
A square Bakelite stick is attached to the handle. U-shaped clips are placed on the square bakelite rod. When the handle is moved up, the U-shaped clips turn on the circuit by connecting the contact points when the handle is moved down, and then the switch turns off the circuit. Line cables are typically placed at the bottom and load cables at the top of the switch. The main switch is used to control the entire supply of a house or office.
These are the following types:• I.C.D.P. The iron-clad double pole main switch is used for single phase supply control and is rated at 15A, 30A, 60A, 100A, 250 volts.
• I.C.T.P. The iron-armoured three-pole main switch is used for three-phase supply control and is rated at 15A, 30A, 60A, 100A, 150A, 200A and 500 volts. 3-phase 4-wire master switches are also available.
The fourth jumper wire is used when idle.
